Ethical Principles and Publication Policy

1. Ethical Principles and Publication Standards

The Journal of Migration and Settlement Studies (JOMISS) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of ethical publishing and academic integrity. The journal aims to ensure that scientific knowledge is produced, evaluated, and disseminated in a transparent, objective, and ethical manner.

The editorial and publication processes of JOMISS are conducted in accordance with internationally recognized ethical standards and guidelines, including:

All parties involved in the publication process—authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher—are expected to adhere to these ethical principles.

2. Aims and Scope of the Journal

The Journal of Migration and Settlement Studies is an international peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes scholarly research on migration and settlement studies.

The journal welcomes interdisciplinary studies from various fields, including but not limited to:

History, Literature, Geography, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Archaeology, International Relations, Public Administration, Educational Sciences, Law, Music, Theology, Economics, Folklore, and Art History.

JOMISS publishes the following types of manuscripts:

  • Original Research Articles
  • Review Articles

All submissions are evaluated in terms of originality, scientific quality, methodological rigor, and academic contribution to the field.

3. Peer Review Process

JOMISS applies a double-blind peer review system in which both the authors and reviewers remain anonymous throughout the evaluation process.

The review process includes the following stages:

Editorial Screening:

All submitted manuscripts are first examined by the editorial board to determine their suitability with respect to the journal’s scope, academic standards, formatting requirements, and ethical principles.

Peer Review:

Manuscripts that pass the editorial screening are sent to at least two independent reviewers who are experts in the relevant field.

Editorial Decision:

Based on the reviewers’ reports, the editor may make one of the following decisions:

  • Acceptance
  • Minor or major revision
  • Resubmission for review
  • Rejection

The confidentiality of both authors and reviewers is strictly maintained during the evaluation process.

4. Research Ethics

Research involving human participants or animals must comply with internationally accepted ethical standards.

For such studies, authors must obtain approval from an authorized Ethics Committee and provide the following information in the manuscript:

  • Name of the ethics committee
  • Date of approval
  • Approval or decision number

The relevant ethics committee document must also be uploaded to the journal submission system.

5. Plagiarism and Similarity Policy

JOMISS maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward academic misconduct and unethical publishing practices.

All manuscripts submitted to the journal are screened using plagiarism detection software such as iThenticate.

If the similarity rate exceeds 20%, the manuscript may be returned to the author without entering the peer review process.

The following practices are considered serious ethical violations:

  • Plagiarism
  • Data fabrication
  • Data falsification
  • Salami slicing (fragmentation of research)
  • Inappropriate or unjustified authorship

Manuscripts in which ethical violations are detected will be rejected or removed from the evaluation process.

6. Responsibilities of Authors

Authors submitting manuscripts to JOMISS are expected to comply with the following principles:

  • Submitted manuscripts must be original and unpublished.
  • The manuscript must not be under consideration by another journal simultaneously.
  • All sources and references must be properly cited.
  • Only individuals who made significant scholarly contributions should be listed as authors.
  • Any financial support or potential conflicts of interest must be clearly declared.
  • If the study is derived from a thesis, dissertation, or funded project, this must be explicitly indicated.

Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the data and analyses presented in their work.

7. Article Withdrawal Policy

Authors may request the withdrawal of a submitted manuscript within 15 (fifteen) days after submission. Withdrawal requests submitted after this period will not be accepted unless justified by exceptional circumstances.

8. Responsibilities of Editors

Editors play a critical role in maintaining the quality and integrity of the journal. They are responsible for:

  • Managing the publication process in a fair, objective, and transparent manner
  • Ensuring the scientific quality of published content
  • Supervising the peer review process
  • Taking appropriate actions in cases of ethical misconduct

Editorial decisions are made solely on the basis of academic merit, without regard to the authors’ gender, nationality, institutional affiliation, or personal characteristics.

9. Responsibilities of Reviewers

Reviewers are expected to evaluate manuscripts in accordance with the following principles:

  • Objectivity and impartiality
  • Confidentiality
  • Academic and scientific evaluation
  • Avoidance of conflicts of interest

Reviewers must treat all manuscripts as confidential documents and must not share them with third parties.

10. Conflict of Interest

Authors, editors, and reviewers must disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could influence the evaluation or publication process.

Any financial, institutional, or personal relationships that may affect the objectivity of the work should be clearly declared to the editorial office.

11. Open Access Policy

The Journal of Migration and Settlement Studies adopts a fully open access publishing model.

All articles published in the journal are freely and permanently accessible online without subscription or access fees.

This policy aims to enhance the global dissemination and accessibility of scientific knowledge.

12. Copyright Policy

The copyright of articles published in JOMISS belongs to the authors.

By submitting their manuscripts, authors grant the journal the right to publish their work. Published articles may be used for academic and research purposes provided that proper citation is given.

13. Complaints and Ethical Misconduct

Complaints, objections, and reports of ethical misconduct regarding the journal’s editorial or publication processes may be submitted to the editorial office.

All complaints will be handled in accordance with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
